A Peer Support Program has started at Blue Hills

On Friday afternoon, May 10, eight Yr 11 leaders and all Yr 7 students participated in Peer Support activities which developed skills in leadership, positive communication, teamwork, empathy, tolerance and caring for others.

The afternoon included games, The Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10; 29–37), group discussions and drama. The students’ performances of their own plays successfully presented a variety of positive responses to the key question:How can we be good neighbours at Blue Hills College?

This was the second stage of an on-going Peer Support Program leading up to the Blue Hills College School Camp (Term 3 Week 7, Monday August 26 to Wednesday August 28), where all students of Yrs 7 and 11 will combine in teams to participate in an Outdoor Education Program.

Many thanks to ALL those students who engaged so positively during Friday’s program. It was great to see senior and junior students interacting and developing their skills in Peer Support. Let’s make sure that all those great ideas presented on Friday are put into practice in everyday situations.

This week students and staff from BHC will be enjoying a special hour of spiritual focus each day. A guest speaker ‘Matt Parra’ is presenting on ‘ Where God is in the Tough Times’ Sophie Husband has written a special drama which is performed by our own students each day and Tasman Chapman has organised the musicians and special music for the week.

MiniChef is BACK!!

Blue Hills College is again putting on the successful cooking program for pre-schoolers called ‘MiniChef’. This year there are 2 community classes running on Tuesday and Wednesday. Only a couple of places are left so call the College for more information. The first of 4 classes starts this week. The total cost is $12. All members of our community are welcome!!

NAPLAN TESTS MAY 15 &16

The annual NAPLAN tests will be held Monday May 15, Tuesday May 16 and Thursday May 17, 2012. NAPLAN is an annual assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It tests the types of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy. The assessments are undertaken nationwide, every year.

The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) is the independent statutory authority responsible for the overall management of the Australian National Assessment Program, in collaboration with representatives from all states and territories and non-government school sectors.

NAPLAN tests identify whether all students have the literacy and numeracy skills that provide the critical foundation for their learning, and for their productive and rewarding participation in the community. Students are assessed using common national tests in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy.

We encourage all parents/caregivers to read the Parent Information Pamphlet and to contact the school if further clarification/explanation is required.

Leadership Training for Yr 6

On Monday, April 30, a group of our Year 6 leaders travelled to Tweed Heads to attend an Impact Leadership Conference.Everyone had an enjoyable day and learned a lot through a variety of activities, videos, talks and interaction with students from other schools.

Host Families Needed

25 Japanese students from our sister school in Tokyo will be visiting Blue Hills College from 23 July to 5 August and we desperately need Host Families for this short period of time. The experience of hosting a Japanese student is often both an enriching and exciting experience for you and your family.

If you are interested, please contact the Office as soon as possible. Host families receive $300 at the conclusion of their student’s homestay to assist with expenses.
